After graduating from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Boğaziçi University, Dolunay Solmaz began her master’s studies in Sound Arts at the Istanbul Technical University’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM). Workshops and summer programmes she attended at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) further contributed to her academic and artistic development.

Solmaz’s practice is shaped by the idea of instrumentalising tools; motors, induction microphones, hydrophones and sensors become not only technical components but also central subjects within her work. Embracing the accessibility and experimental ethos of DIY culture, she explores ways to actively involve audiences in the process. Her recent work focuses on multimodal systems that examine the experience of sound through material frameworks.

Her interactive installation on auditory illusions, temporal perception and loops was exhibited at Arter’s Sonified symposium (2025) and at PdMaxCon25, organised by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign School of Music (2025). Her sound sculpture, composed of stainless-steel sheets and motors, was included in the exhibition From Nature (2025) at Harvestworks, New York.

Solmaz’s primary research interests include exploring inaudible images and unheard sounds that lie beyond sensory thresholds.
