Nikolai Luzhin is the chauffeur for an Eastern European family that is part of London’s world of organized crime and tied to the “criminal brotherhood” Vory V Zakone. But Nikolai’s fortunes change when he meets Anna Khitrova, who is a midwife at a hospital. When a young woman dies shortly after childbirth, Anna ends up with her diary, which is written in Russian. The diary contains important information about the family’s criminal deeds. The information that Anna gives Nikolai changes his life, and his allegiance to the family gradually weakens. As he did in “A History of Violence”, acclaimed director David Cronenberg once again presents a thought-provoking cinematic experience, and a meditation on human nature in its struggle with moral dilemmas. The film’s screenwriter, Steve Knight, was also responsible for the script of the internationally acclaimed “Dirty Pretty Things”. |
