Tuya and the shepherd Bater’s life together grows increasingly difficult when Bater loses both of his legs while searching for water in Neimenggu (central Mongolia) during a devastating drought. Tuya, who now has to shoulder the couple’s burden alone, ignores Bater’s insistent pleas that she leave him and marry someone else. One day after falling ill, Tuya begins to consider divorce. She finally decides to marry someone so that he can help take care of their two kids and their sheep. After a long search, she finally runs into Baolier, an old friend from school, and her destiny changes. She leaves Bater with Baolier, who has agreed to look after him, and together with their two children, goes to the city. |
