Middle-aged Maggie is wandering hopelessly through the streets of London, in search of money to pay for the medical treatment needed to keep her ill grandchild alive, when she stumbles upon a “Hostess Wanted” ad in the window of a shop called “Sexy World.” And thus does Maggie become part of an utterly unfamiliar world, where she goes by the pseudonym Irina Palm. It’s a life that’s not so easy to swallow for a middle class widow worried about what the neighbors will think. In the end, however, Maggie not only braves that life for the love of her son Tom, daughter-in-law Sarah, and grandchild Olly, but she even achieves a measure of fame while she’s at it. Singer Marianne Faithfull gives a stellar performance as Maggie. |
