Tolstoy, who died of pneumonia in a remote train station at the age of 82 in 1910, is commemorated through various events on the 100th anniversary of his death. Adapted from the novel of Jay Parini, the film follows Tolstoy in the last year of his life while telling the amusing, emotional and complicated love story of Tolstoy and Sofia, his wife and muse of 48 years. For their outstanding performances, Hellen Mirren, who has Russian blood from her father's side, was nominated for Best Actress and Christopher Plummer for Best Supporting Actor Oscars.
